Bess Prescott
Bess Prescott is a yoga practitioner and teacher whose work explores the intersection of yoga, human rights, history, ethics, politics, and environmentalism. Bess studied and practiced law for several years before turning to teaching yoga full-time in 2011, having maintained a regular practice since 2001.
In 2015, Bess co-founded Creature Yoga in Byron Bay and helped grow it to worldwide recognition over nearly a decade. Deeply engaged in the critical study of yoga history and original texts, she completed her first year of Sanskrit Studies at ANU in 2021. She teaches yoga āsana and lectures on yoga history and philosophy for teacher trainings around the world.
Bess is deeply curious about yoga — how it has done and can do good in the world, and how it has also contributed to harm. She continually examines questions such as: how can teachers and practitioners honour tradition while refusing to uphold dogma, hierarchy, patriarchy, and caste apartheid? How do we confront the impacts of colonisation and capitalism, or the dangers and superficiality of modern wellness culture?
Her interests include the intersection of yoga and politics, the processes of debrahminisation and desanskritisation, and the ongoing question of cultural appropriation. She recognises that the teachings of yoga are many — some transcendent, others deeply problematic — and is committed to asking: Which texts and teachings align with my ethics, and which do not?
The principles that guide Bess’s practice are non-harming, truth-telling, and discernment. For her, the only yoga worth practising is one that is deeply engaged with the world. Looking inward, she believes, is only half the practice — the other half is becoming strong and steady enough to offer a hand to others.
For Bess, yoga teaching is a co-creative process, a dialogue between teacher and student. She looks forward to continuing this shared journey of inquiry, integrity, and transformation.
